Check this page for the latest updates and news for Cancer Registrars in Ohio!
Legislative Update - Monday, December 19, 2011 Today Congress passed a budget that increased funding for cancer research and prevention programs for the 2012 fiscal year.
At a time when all the talk was about budget cuts, Congress heard our message about making cancer a national priority. They heard the voices of real people -- volunteers in every community across the nation -- telling them the terrible impact that cuts could have in the fight against cancer.
This is an important victory and one that is worthy of celebration during this holiday season.
At the same time, we must realize that 2012 brings another huge challenge. The inability of the Super Committee to reach a deal last month could lead to huge cuts to cancer research funding in 2013.

CLP Newsletter October 2011 Dear Fellow Cancer Liaison Physicians and Ohio Registrars,
I hope the fall weather is agreeing with all of you. I also hope you are in good health and that your patients are doing well.
I would like to use this newsletter to bring you all up to date on some achievements in Commission on Cancer accredited Ohio cancer programs.
Under the leadership of D. McKellar, MD, FACS, Wayne Healthcare, Greenville, Ohio received the New Programs Outstanding Achievement Award. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Dr. Mckellar, MD, FACS, continues to serve on the Commission on Cancer as a member of the Executive Committee, the Chair of the Accreditation Committee and a member of the Nominating Committee.
The Commission on Cancer 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award recipients in Ohio were Grant Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio and Genesis Healthcare System, Zanesville Ohio. CONGRATULATIONS !!!
The Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award recognizes individuals who have proven excellence in the following area(s):
• Improving the quality of care delivered at a CoC-approved facility
• Contributing to the accredited status of the cancer program
• Exceeding CLP expectations to strengthen the cancer program
• Demonstrating cancer control leadership in the community
Kenneth Graffeo, MD, FACS, Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware, Ohio was the recipient of the 2010 Cancer Liaison Physician Outstanding Physician Outstanding Performance Award. CONGRATULATIONS !!!
The Commission on Cancer reviews the Cancer Liaison Physician Annual Reports in order to evaluate and improve the Cancer Liaison Physician Program. In the last year, based on this input, the CoC has redefined the role of the CLP in order to make it relevant and meaningful. The CoC has provided educational webinars free of charge to educate CLPs on their role in their cancer program, educate CLPs on how to use the NCDB Data ( NCDB Benchmark Reports, Survival Reports, CP3R, RQRS) to evaluate the quality of the cancer care provided by their cancer program. A review of previous newsletters will help provide you access to these resources. If that does not work, ask your cancer registrar to help you.
I have taken the liberty to review our Ohio CLP Annual Reports. Ohio's CLPs do a credible job in assuring the quality of patient care, providing cancer supportive services, cancer control and collaborating with the American Cancer Society.
Thank you for all you do.
I realize filling out your Cancer Liaison Physician Annual Report is not a high priority item in your very busy days. However, I would like to send the physicians listed below a friendly reminder to complete their annual report. Your cancer registrar will be glad to help. But remember the registrar does not know all you do; therefore, sit down and complete the report with your registrar.
THANK YOU!!!.

CLP Newsletter – September 2011
Dear Fellow Cancer Liaison Physicians and Registrars,
I hope you all are doing well.
This newsletter is to provide you with a additional reminder to explore your cancer program's interest in the RQRS. This is an important method of tracking the quality of care in your cancer programs. The recommended CoC Educational Portal webinar ( cited in the announcement below) on the RQRS would be an excellent way of having the whole cancer committee understand the value of the RQRS and how it might be implemented in your cancer program.
Yours truly,
V. Moysaenko, MD, FACS
Co-Chair, Ohio Cancer Liaison Physicians
On behalf of Andrew Stewart and the NCDB Team – here is the latest update.
Rapid Quality Reporting System: Enrollment Starts September 19
Following extensive development and testing with seven Alpha test programs and 65 Beta test sites, the Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS) is ready for expansion to all CoC accredited programs.
RQRS enrollment is:
§ Voluntary
§ Limited to CoC-accredited cancer programs
§ Managed entirely online through CoC Datalinks
§ Opening at noon CDT, September 19, 2011
RQRS allows cancer programs to track adherence to National Quality Forum-endorsed accountability and surveillance measures in real clinical time and represents a significant extension to the retrospective quality of patient care reporting tools currently maintained and supported by the CoC. The adoption of RQRS may require changes in registry operations, and most of the issues that should be considered by potential enrollees were summarized in an article published in the spring 2011 edition of the Journal of Registry Management.
To ensure maximum participation and benefit within programs enrolling in RQRS, the CoC requires each of the following individuals to complete the enrollment process: the Cancer Committee Chair, Cancer Liaison Physician, Cancer Program Administrator, and Hospital Registrar. These individuals must use their own CoC Datalinks usernames and passwords to complete the RQRS registration steps.
All programs interested in enrollment should visit the RQRS webpage at http://www.facs.org/cancer/ncdb/rqrs.html for more information; in particular, review the following posted documents to become familiar with RQRS in advance of enrollment:
§ RQRS: Getting Started
§ RQRS: Navigation Guide
§ RQRS: Data Submission
Or view the On-Demand webinar on the CoC Online Education Portal titled: "Move to the Fast Track: Getting Your Cancer Program Ready for the Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS)."
In preparation for using RQRS, workstations must be running:
§ Adobe Flash v10.3 (instructions for this free download are posted on our webpage) athttp://www.facs.org/cancer/ncdb/flashplayer.pdf
§ Use any one of the following web browsers:
§ Internet Explorer 8 or higher
§ Google Chrome 13.0 or higher
§ Mozilla Firefox 3.6 or higher
§ Safari 5.2 or higher
For questions, contact NCDB_RQRS@facs.org

The NEW OCRA Website!
Welcome to the new and improved OCRA website!
With the approval of the Board of Directors, we are hoping that this new webhosting software will allow us the tools to make this site even more useful to you our members and visitors. One of the new additions will be a members only section featuring an online, searchable membership directory. This will also allow us to make annual meeting handouts available to attendees of our Annual Conference secure. More pages will be coming in the coming weeks and months as well, so be sure to check back often.
If you have any questions or comments about the new website, please let Karen Ellwood, OCRA President, or myself know. I look forward to facilitating this website for our members and hope you are all as excited as I am with this new venture.
